Hello, world

October 13, 2016 in Thoughts

After three-something months of thinking, it’s finally time to jump off that cliff and launch this little blog out into the internet.

I have a lot of great content queued up and a ton of fun things in the works this month. Hikes! New fashion finds! Little weekend trips! It’ll all be here.

To kick things off in style, here’s a little Tiny Cactus primer.

Where did the name “Tiny Cactus” come from?

Some of my favorite memes are ones involving the combo of cute animals/small things and a positive message. I took the name Tiny Cactus from one of my favorites: “I am a tiny cactus and I believe in you. You can do the thing.”

What kind of blog is this?

My thoughts have been all over the place for the past three months about what I want to use this space for. Travel photography? Thrifted finds? Random thoughts? The occasional craft project?

Every time I tried to shove myself into a niche (“Okay, I’m only going to post travel photos. Nothing else!”) my writing started falling flat and feeling fake.

So, despite my past feelings towards lifestyle blogs, calling this a lifestyle blog is the best way to define all the things I’ll be sharing here.

Who is Kathie Jurek?

Hi! That’s me!

I’m a late twenties lady living in Seattle with a taste for travel and thrifted threads & objects. I’ve bounced around the country for the past three years (hello to my bay area, LA, Texas, and east coast friends!) and I think the pacific northwest is going to be where we put down roots.

Last but not least…

I owe a lot of gratitude to the folks who’ve helped me with this not-so-tiny endeavor.

My husband, for constantly challenging my thinking. Shera, Kelsie, Tali, and countless other friends who’ve encouraged me. Shiela from Sison Designs, who created my beautiful logo/banner and was a dream to work with. Angela from angela & evan photography, for taking these perfect head shots and thinking outside the box. Ravayna, for answering all my little questions and pushing me to just get things started. And everyone who has ever helped me figure out anything camera related, most notably Jun, Holly, and Tali.

First comment! 🙂 Aww, I get not one, but two special mentions?? You are too sweet!

This site is beautiful, and so you! I’m glad you’re not limiting yourself to just one topic and instead going with a lifestyle blog, because it makes things so much more interesting. And I love that you totally owned the WordPress “Hello World” intro page!

Aww, I’m honored to have you as my first comment! <3

I think going broad, at least to start, is the best way to develop a genuine voice. At least in my experience.

Anyway, yes, hello world! 🙂 Here it is!

Agreed on maintaining– so hard when our lives get busy! Hoping to get ahead of that as soon as possible. And thank you, our wedding photographer did my headshots. She’s the best.

Congratulations! I just started blogging too! I think it’s totally okay to have more than one focus because we’re people who have multiple areas of interest.

Yay, a fellow new blogger! And I completely agree– I admire people who have a strong focus but it just feels unnatural for me. personally. Good luck with your blogging, I’m following along! 🙂
